Cua Lo Beach has one of the shortest and most intense seasons of any coastline in Vietnam. From May to August the town is full, the seafood stalls run past midnight and the casuarina strip behind the sand is a wall of lights; by October much of it has closed for the year. That rhythm is not a warning, it is the single most useful thing to know before booking. So what is this beach actually like, and when should you come?
A domestic beach, and proud of it
Cua Lo built itself for Vietnamese families rather than international resorts, and the difference shows everywhere: large group tables, seafood sold by weight, hotels priced for a family of six, and a promenade that fills after the sun goes down rather than at noon.
If you want quiet luxury this is the wrong coast. If you want to see how the north-central provinces actually take a summer holiday, there is nowhere better.
The sand and the water
The beach is a long, gently shelving strip of pale sand, backed by casuarina planted as a windbreak. The gradient is shallow a long way out, which is why families with small children choose it.
Swimming is a morning-and-evening activity here. Locals go in before seven and again after four, and the middle of the day is spent under the trees rather than on the sand.
The trees matter more than they look. They were planted to hold the sand against the wind, and they are the reason the strip has usable shade at all in a place where the afternoon sun is relentless.
How the seafood system works
Along the front, tanks and trays hold the catch and restaurants cook what you choose. You pick the creature, it is weighed in front of you, you agree the cooking method, and the price is settled at the tank rather than at the table.
Confirm the price per kilogram before it goes into the net, not after. This is normal practice and no one will find the question rude — the ones who mind are the ones to avoid.
Deckchairs and umbrellas are rented by the row and the rate is usually posted; agree it before sitting down, as with everything else on this beach.
The dish the town is known for
The local speciality is squid so fresh it is still translucent, landed and cooked within hours; see Cua Lo live squid for how to order it properly. It is seasonal and it sells out, so it is an early-evening order rather than a late-night one.
Ask for it grilled or steamed rather than fried. The point of the dish is the texture of something landed hours earlier, and batter hides exactly what you came for.
When to come and when not to
June and July are peak: hottest, busiest, most alive. May and August are the sensible compromise. From late September the town winds down, and in winter the wind comes hard off the sea and much of the strip shuts.
Weekends in peak season fill the hotels early; a midweek stay changes both the price and the feel of the place .
Rip currents and sudden depth changes do occur along this coast. Swim between the marked areas, keep children within reach, and take notice when the lifeguards move the flags.
Beyond the sand
The islet offshore is worth a look — see Hon Ngu Island — and the fishing port at the northern end is where the dried seafood on every souvenir shelf comes from. Cua Lo sits a short drive from the city, so it pairs easily with a morning inland at Kim Lien Village and an evening on the coast. Biển Cửa Lò có một trong những mùa ngắn và dữ dội nhất trong các bãi biển Việt Nam. Từ tháng năm đến tháng tám, thị xã kín người, hàng hải sản chạy tới quá nửa đêm và dải phi lao sau bãi cát sáng rực đèn; đến tháng mười thì phần lớn đã đóng cửa hết năm. Một bãi biển của khách nội địa, và tự hào vì điều đó
Cửa Lò dựng lên để phục vụ gia đình Việt chứ không phải resort quốc tế, và khác biệt đó lộ ra ở khắp nơi: bàn lớn cho cả đoàn, hải sản bán theo cân, khách sạn tính giá cho nhà sáu người, và con đường ven biển chỉ đông sau khi mặt trời lặn chứ không phải giữa trưa.
Nếu bạn tìm sự sang trọng yên tĩnh thì đây là nhầm bờ biển. Còn nếu muốn thấy các tỉnh Bắc Trung Bộ đi nghỉ hè thật sự như thế nào, không đâu rõ hơn chỗ này.
Bãi cát và mặt nước
Bãi là một dải cát nhạt dài, thoải dần, phía sau là hàng phi lao trồng chắn gió. Nước nông ra rất xa, đó là lý do các gia đình có con nhỏ chọn nơi này.
Tắm biển ở đây là việc của sáng sớm và chiều muộn. Người địa phương xuống nước trước bảy giờ rồi lại xuống sau bốn giờ, còn giữa trưa thì ngồi dưới tán phi lao chứ không ra cát.
Hàng phi lao quan trọng hơn vẻ ngoài của nó. Chúng được trồng để giữ cát trước gió, và là lý do duy nhất khiến dải bờ này có bóng mát dùng được ở một nơi nắng chiều gay gắt như vậy.
Cách mua hải sản vận hành thế nào
Dọc mặt tiền, các bể và khay bày hàng tươi, nhà hàng nấu đúng thứ bạn chọn. Bạn chỉ con nào, người ta cân trước mặt bạn, thống nhất cách chế biến, và giá chốt ngay tại bể chứ không phải lúc ngồi vào bàn.
Hãy chốt giá theo ký trước khi con hàng vào vợt, đừng chốt sau. Đây là chuyện bình thường và không ai thấy câu hỏi đó bất lịch sự — nơi nào khó chịu thì chính là nơi nên tránh.
Ghế bố và dù cho thuê theo dãy, giá thường có niêm yết; hãy thống nhất trước khi ngồi xuống, như mọi thứ khác trên bãi biển này.
Món làm nên tên tuổi thị xã
Đặc sản ở đây là mực tươi tới mức thân còn trong suốt, vừa lên bờ đã lên bếp; xem mực nháy Cửa Lò để biết gọi thế nào cho đúng. Món này theo mùa và hết rất nhanh, nên là món gọi đầu buổi tối chứ không phải lúc khuya.
Hãy gọi nướng hoặc hấp thay vì chiên. Điểm ăn tiền của món là độ giòn ngọt của con hàng vừa lên bờ vài tiếng, mà lớp bột chiên thì che đi đúng cái bạn tìm.
Nên đi lúc nào và không nên lúc nào
Tháng sáu và tháng bảy là cao điểm: nóng nhất, đông nhất, sống động nhất. Tháng năm và tháng tám là phương án dung hòa hợp lý. Từ cuối tháng chín thị xã lắng dần, và mùa đông thì gió biển thổi rát, phần lớn dịch vụ đóng cửa.

Dòng chảy xa bờ và hố nước sâu bất ngờ đều có ở dải bờ này. Hãy bơi trong khu vực có phao, giữ trẻ trong tầm tay, và để ý khi lực lượng cứu hộ dời cờ.
Ngoài bãi cát ra
Hòn đảo ngoài khơi đáng ngó qua — xem đảo Hòn Ngư — còn bến cá ở đầu phía bắc chính là nơi ra lò toàn bộ số hải sản khô bày trên kệ quà. Cửa Lò cách thành phố một quãng lái ngắn, nên rất dễ ghép với buổi sáng phía trong đồng ở Làng Sen Kim Liên và một buổi tối ngoài biển.
