At noon in Hoa Thanh, a cathedral the color of a fairground fills with music, and Vietnam's most visually astonishing religion holds its daily service. The Cao Dai Holy See — mother temple of a faith founded in Tay Ninh in 1926 — is a building with no relatives: dragon-wound columns, a ceiling of painted skies, and above the altar the Divine Eye that watches from every window.
A religion born here
Cao Dai fused Buddhist, Taoist, Confucian and Christian threads into a Vietnamese whole; its saints include Victor Hugo. The Holy See, built 1933–1955 largely by unpaid devotee labor, is its Vatican — a 100-hectare precinct of gates, gardens and offices around the Great Temple .
The noon ceremony
- Four services daily; noon suits travelers. Dignitaries in white, yellow, blue and red file in to chanted music.
- Visitors watch from the upper gallery: shoes off, shoulders covered, cameras silent and pointed away from worshippers' faces.
- The interior walk after — nine ascending floor levels toward the star-flecked globe of the Divine Eye.
Reading the building
Everything is doctrine in color: the twenty-eight dragon columns, the Long Hoa trinity, the eye-and-globe altar. Guides at the gate decode it well.

Một tôn giáo sinh ra ở chính nơi này
Đạo Cao Đài hòa các dòng Phật, Lão, Nho và Cơ Đốc thành một chỉnh thể rất Việt; trong hàng thánh của đạo có cả Victor Hugo. Tòa thánh, xây 1933–1955 phần lớn bằng công quả của tín đồ, là "Vatican" của đạo — khuôn viên rộng cả trăm hecta gồm cổng, vườn và cơ sở đạo quanh Đền Thánh .
Thánh lễ 12 giờ trưa
- Mỗi ngày bốn thời lễ; giờ trưa hợp với lữ khách nhất. Chức sắc áo trắng, vàng, xanh, đỏ tiến vào theo nhạc lễ.
- Khách xem từ hành lang trên: bỏ giày, che vai, máy ảnh im lặng và không chĩa vào mặt người đang hành lễ.
- Sau lễ là vòng đi trong nội điện — chín cấp nền dâng dần về phía quả cầu lấm tấm sao của Thiên Nhãn.
"Đọc" công trình
Mọi thứ đều là giáo lý bằng màu sắc: hai mươi tám cột rồng, bộ ba Long Hoa, bàn thờ mắt-và-quả-cầu. Hướng dẫn viên ở cổng giải mã rất tốt.
