Ask southern Vietnam to name a spirit and one hamlet answers. Go Den rice liquor — ruou de from the old Long An crossroads of Ben Luc, now new Tay Ninh — has been the South's benchmark moonshine for over a century: glutinous-rice spirit, yeast cakes of family recipe, and a name so trusted it borders on appellation.
Why Go Den became the name
Good sticky rice country, house yeast blends of herbs and spice, and slow wood-fire distillation built the reputation; the roadside position on the Saigon–Mekong artery spread it. Real Go Den runs clear as glass, blooms rice-sweet in the nose, and burns clean — the hangover, locals say, is the counterfeit's signature, not theirs.
Reading a true bottle
- Beads: shake — fine, slow-fading bubbles signal proper proof.
